ChatGPT saves your virtual try-on reference photos so you can reuse them in future try-ons without uploading them again. You can find, replace, or delete these photos under Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. However, managing a reference photo is different from deleting a conversation or controlling how OpenAI uses your data to improve its models.

Uploading a selfie to try on a jacket, dress, or pair of shoes can make online shopping easier. Instead of imagining how an item might look, you can see an AI-generated preview using your own photograph.

But there is another side to this convenience. What happens to the original photo after the preview appears? Does ChatGPT keep your selfie? Can you remove it? Does deleting the conversation remove the saved reference photo too?

These are important questions, especially when your photograph contains your face, body, or other personal details.

OpenAI provides dedicated controls for managing virtual try-on reference photos. This guide explains how those controls work, what happens when you delete an image, and which privacy settings you should review before uploading personal photos.

Does ChatGPT Save Your Virtual Try-On Photos?

Yes. ChatGPT saves reference photos for future virtual try-ons. This means you do not need to upload the same selfie every time you want to visualize another clothing item or accessory. You can manage these saved photos separately through your ChatGPT personalization settings.

There are two important things to understand.

First, the photograph you upload serves as a visual reference for generating try-on images. Second, ChatGPT can retain that reference for reuse in future shopping sessions.

Why Does ChatGPT Keep Reference Photos?

    The main reason is convenience.

Imagine uploading a full-body photograph to try on a jacket. Later, you find another jacket or a pair of shoes that you want to visualize.

Without a saved reference photo, you would need to upload your photograph again. The saved-photo feature makes this process easier.

OpenAI describes reference photos as reusable images that users can manage from their settings.

However, saving a reference photo for future try-ons does not mean every generated image or conversation is managed through the same setting.

Are Reference Photos the Same as Generated Images?

No. These are different image types.

    Image typePurpose
Reference photoYour original selfie or personal photograph used for try-ons
Uploaded product imageA photograph or screenshot of clothing or accessories
Generated try-on imageAn AI-created preview showing how an item might look on you
Chat attachmentAn image uploaded within a conversation

This distinction matters when managing your photos. Removing a reference photo should not be treated as confirmation that every uploaded attachment or generated image has also been deleted.

Where Are ChatGPT Reference Photos Stored?

You can manage your saved reference photos through the ChatGPT settings interface.

OpenAI provides a dedicated Reference photos section under Personalization. It allows you to select an existing photograph and either replace it or remove it.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Open ChatGPT.
    2. Select your account menu.
    3. Open Settings.
    4. Select Personalization.
    5. Find Reference photos.
    6. Select the photograph you want to manage.

Menu labels and interface placement may change with future ChatGPT updates.

An important distinction: this setting tells you where to manage your reference photos. It does not identify the physical server location where OpenAI stores image data.

OpenAI’s general data-handling documentation explains its broader data practices, but you should not assume that the Reference photos page reveals the technical storage location of your images.

How to Find and Manage Saved ChatGPT Reference Photos

Finding your saved reference photos is straightforward once you know where to look.

    Find Reference Photos on Desktop

    On a desktop computer:

    1. Visit ChatGPT and sign in.
    2. Open your profile or account menu.
    3. Select Settings.
    4. Open Personalization.
    5. Select Reference photos.

You should see the reference-photo management interface when the feature is available for your account.

Select an image to access its available management options.

Find Reference Photos on iPhone and Android

The mobile interface may look slightly different, but the official management path remains:

Settings → Personalization → Reference photos

Open the ChatGPT mobile app, navigate to Settings, and look for Personalization.

If you cannot find the option, check whether your app is updated and whether the feature is available on your account.

How to Delete ChatGPT Virtual Try-On Photos

You can remove a saved reference photo directly from the Reference photos section.

OpenAI’s official instructions provide two relevant options: Change photo and the delete icon.

    Delete a Saved Reference Photo

    Follow these steps:

    1. Open ChatGPT Settings.
    2. Select Personalization.
    3. Open Reference photos.
    4. Select the photo you want to remove.
    5. Select the delete icon.

This removes the selected photo from your saved reference-photo management feature.

Important: Do not assume this action also deletes copies previously uploaded to conversations or separately saved files.

Delete a Chat Containing Uploaded Photos

If you uploaded a photograph within a conversation, you may also want to delete that conversation.

    To delete a conversation:

    1. Open your ChatGPT chat history.
    2. Find the conversation containing the uploaded image.
    3. Open its options menu.
    4. Select Delete.
    5. Confirm your choice.

OpenAI says deleted chats are removed from your account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, subject to exceptions such as legal or security obligations and content already de-identified and disassociated from your account.

However, deleting a conversation does not automatically delete a separately saved file in Library or another supported storage area.

    What Should You Delete?

Use this checklist to manage different types of image-related data.

What you want to removeWhere to look
Saved try-on reference photoSettings → Personalization → Reference photos
Conversation containing an uploaded photoChat history
Separately saved uploaded fileLibrary or relevant storage area
Generated image in a conversationRelevant conversation and any separately saved copy
Entire account and associated dataAccount deletion settings

The key is to identify where the photograph is saved before deciding which deletion action to use.

Does ChatGPT Use Your Photos to Train Its AI Models?

OpenAI’s consumer data policies allow eligible content to be used to improve its models depending on your account settings. You can turn off the Improve the model for everyone setting on supported personal accounts.

This is a separate privacy decision from managing your reference photos.

For example, you might want to keep your saved reference photo available for future try-ons while preventing eligible conversations from being used to improve OpenAI models.

How to Turn Off Improve the Model for Everyone

    On desktop:

    1. Open ChatGPT.
    2. Select your account menu.
    3. Open Settings.
    4. Select Data controls.
    5. Find Improve the model for everyone.
    6. Turn the setting off.

    On mobile:

    1. Open the ChatGPT app.
    2. Open the sidebar.
    3. Select your profile icon.
    4. Open Settings.
    5. Select Data controls.
    6. Turn off Improve the model for everyone.

Your setting applies across your signed-in devices on your personal account.

Does Turning Off Model Improvement Delete Saved Photos?

No. Turning off model improvement does not delete your saved chats or reference photos.

    These settings serve different purposes:

    • Reference photos controls manage photographs saved for future virtual try-ons.
    • Data Controls manage whether eligible content can be used to improve OpenAI models.
    • Chat history controls manage saved conversations.

You must manage each separately when your goal is to remove different types of personal data.

What Happens to Your Photos After You Delete Them?

This is where you should be careful about the difference between documented deletion policies and assumptions.

OpenAI publishes general retention rules for chats and files. However, its virtual try-on documentation does not specify a separate retention period for dedicated reference photos.

How Long Does OpenAI Keep Deleted Chat Data?

According to OpenAI’s Chat and File Retention documentation:

    • Regular and archived chats remain saved until deleted or removed under an applicable workspace policy.
    • Deleted chats are removed from your account view immediately.
    • OpenAI schedules deleted chats for permanent deletion within 30 days.
    • Exceptions can apply for legal, security, or de-identification reasons.

Temporary Chats follow different rules. They do not appear in regular chat history and may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

These are general chat-retention rules. They should not be presented as a confirmed 30-day deletion guarantee for the separate virtual try-on reference-photo feature.

Does Deleting a Reference Photo Remove Every Copy?

OpenAI’s public virtual try-on instructions explain how to remove a saved reference photo. They do not provide a detailed, separate explanation of the deletion lifecycle for every possible copy of that image.

Therefore, avoid assuming that deleting one reference photo also removes:

    • The original upload in an existing conversation.
    • A separately saved file.
    • A generated image stored elsewhere.
    • Any other data subject to a separate retention policy.

If you want to remove an image from multiple locations, review those locations individually.

For additional information, consult the official Chat and File Retention guide.

7 Privacy Precautions Before Uploading Personal Photos

You do not need to avoid virtual try-on completely to protect your privacy. A few sensible precautions can reduce unnecessary exposure.

    1. Choose a Photograph With Minimal Background Information

Use a simple background whenever possible. Avoid photographs showing personal documents, addresses, computer screens, or other sensitive details.

    2. Avoid Including Other People

If you take a full-body photograph, check whether other people appear in the background. Do not upload someone else’s personal photograph without appropriate permission.

    3. Review Your Data Controls

Before uploading personal photographs, check whether Improve the model for everyone is enabled. Understand what this setting controls and what it does not control.

    4. Review Saved Reference Photos

Visit Settings → Personalization → Reference photos periodically. Remove images you no longer want available for future try-ons.

    5. Remove Unnecessary Conversations and Files

If you no longer need a conversation containing personal photographs, consider deleting it. Also check for separately saved files.

    6. Avoid Uploading Highly Sensitive Photographs

A virtual try-on usually does not require identity documents, private family photographs, or other highly sensitive images.

Choose an appropriate photograph that serves the task without revealing unnecessary personal information.

    7. Read OpenAI’s Privacy Documentation

For a broader understanding of your rights and available controls, review the OpenAI Privacy Center and OpenAI Privacy Policy.

Understanding the available controls before uploading a photograph is better than trying to work out how to remove it later.

ChatGPT Virtual Try On Privacy FAQs

    1. Does ChatGPT save your face after virtual try-on?

ChatGPT saves reference photos for future virtual try-ons. OpenAI allows users to manage these photographs through Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. However, its public documentation does not specify a separate retention period for dedicated reference photos.

    2. Can ChatGPT use my selfie to train its AI?

Eligible content submitted through personal ChatGPT accounts may be used to improve OpenAI models depending on your Data Controls settings. You can turn off Improve the model for everyone. This setting controls model improvement, not the deletion of saved reference photos.

    3. Does deleting a ChatGPT conversation delete my reference photo?

Do not assume that it does. OpenAI provides a separate Reference photos management feature and explains that separately saved Library files are not automatically deleted when you delete a conversation. Review each relevant storage location independently.

    4. Can other people see my saved ChatGPT reference photos?

OpenAI does not document saved reference photos as publicly visible content. However, you should not interpret that as a guarantee that no authorized personnel or service providers can ever access submitted content under applicable circumstances. Review OpenAI’s privacy policy and account security settings.

    5. How do I replace my ChatGPT reference photo?

Open Settings, select Personalization, and open Reference photos. Select the photograph you want to change and choose Change photo. Follow the instructions to provide a replacement. This lets you update your reference for future virtual try-ons.

    6. Does Temporary Chat save virtual try-on photos?

Temporary Chats do not appear in regular chat history and are not used to improve OpenAI models under the documented Temporary Chat rules. They may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. However, OpenAI does not explicitly document whether every dedicated reference-photo workflow follows identical retention rules.

    7. How long does OpenAI retain deleted photos?

OpenAI documents a general 30-day deletion schedule for deleted chats, subject to specified exceptions. It also documents separate retention rules for files. However, there is no separately published retention period for dedicated virtual try-on reference photos in the shopping documentation.

Make Your Next Virtual Try-On More Privacy-Conscious

ChatGPT Virtual Try-On can make online shopping more convenient, but uploading a personal photograph deserves some thought.

The most useful step is to understand the difference between saved reference photos, conversation attachments, generated images, and general account data. Each can have a different management process.
